Currently, around 80% of the coal produced is consumed by thermal power plants. With the global shift \u2014 including in India \u2014 towards cleaner energy sources in response to climate change, finding a sustainable way to utilize these vast coal reserves would be highly beneficial for the country.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c759f02 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c759f02\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4631\" src=\"https:\/\/axykno.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/graph-300x244.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/axykno.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/graph-300x244.png 300w, https:\/\/axykno.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/graph.png 479w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/>\n\n<b>Coal gasification is\u00a0 considered as one of the promising cleaner option compared to burning of coal<\/b>.\n\nThe National Steel Policy envisions achieving 300 MT of production capacity by 2030-31 and 500 MT by 2047. To support this growth and associated production processes, the estimated coal requirement will be around 300 MTPA \u2014 comprising approximately 165 million tonnes of coking coal, 35 MTPA of pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal, and 100 million tonnes of non-coking coal for direct reduced iron (DRI).\n<p>Coke remains a critical input in steel making, with around 0.9 tonnes of coke required to produce 1 tonne of hot metal (HM) via BF-BOF. However, Indian coking coal is generally having higher ash content. Therefore, major Steel makers relied upon Imported coking coal.<\/P\n<p>To curtail this, Synthesis gas (Syngas), primarily comprising carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H\u2082), serves as an effective and environmentally friendly reducing agent in steelmaking via the gas-based DRI route. Companies like JSPL have already established steel production facilities using gas-based DRI technology. Promoting the establishment of such plantsis strongly recommended to reduce India&#8217;s dependence on imported coking coal, in alignment with the objectives of the <b><i>Atmanirbhar<\/i><\/b><b><i> Bharat <\/i><\/b><b><i>Abhiyaan<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>A flagship initiative in this direction, <b><i>National Coal Gasification Mission,<\/i><\/b> which aims to achieve 100 MT of gasification by 2030 with an investment of \u20b98,500 crore has been initiated by Ministry of Coal.\n\nThis initiative promotes the use of high-ash, non-coking domestic coal to generate synthesis gas (syngas),<b> a cleaner alternative for DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) steelmaking.<\/b>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><b>Key Policy Initiatives for Coal Gasification\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<b>Coal gasification is\u00a0 considered as one of the promising cleaner option compared to burning of coal<\/b>.\n\nThe National Steel Policy envisions achieving 300 MT of production capacity by 2030-31 and 500 MT by 2047. Moving bed and Fluidized Bed technology (FBT) technology <\/strong>that can handle high ash coal (non washed coal) &amp; converts Carbon containing material into Synthesis gas, composed primarily of Carbon monoxide and\u00a0\u00a0Hydrogen.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif;letter-spacing: 0px\">Cold syngas is depressurized to <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif;letter-spacing: 0px\">3 kg\/cm\u00b2<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif;letter-spacing: 0px\">, and for high\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 flow rates, a <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif;letter-spacing: 0px\">turbo-generator <\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif;letter-spacing: 0px\">recovers energy during depressurization. The low-pressure syngas is blended with recycled top gas to form a reducing gas, heated to <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif;letter-spacing: 0px\">900\u00b0C<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif;letter-spacing: 0px\">, and introduced into the shaft furnace for iron oxide reduction.<\/span><\/p><p><strong>K<\/strong><strong>ey reactions:<\/strong><\/p><p>Fe\u2082O\u2083 + 3H\u2082 \u2192 2Fe + 3H\u2082O Fe\u2082O\u2083 + 3CO \u2192 2Fe + 3CO\u2082<\/p><p>The spent gas is cleaned and CO\u2082 content is reduced below <strong>5% <\/strong>to maintain a high <strong>(H\u2082 + CO) to (H\u2082O + CO\u2082) ratio (&gt;10) <\/strong>for efficient reduction. The <strong>H\u2082\/CO ratio <\/strong>is optimized at <strong>1.6<\/strong>. DRI exits the furnace at around <strong>700\u00b0C<\/strong>, and the treated gas is recycled.<\/p><p>The system accommodates diverse fuels \u2014 <strong>bituminous coal, sub-bituminous coal, lignite, petcoke, and refinery residues<\/strong>. Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) is discharged at a controlled rate from the bottom.\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-315e8ca e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"315e8ca\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bf160bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-ct_text_editor\" data-id=\"bf160bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"ct_text_editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"ct_text_editor-bf160bd\" class=\"ct-text-editor \">\n\t<div class=\"ct-inline-css\"  data-css=\"\n        \t\t\">\n\n    <\/div>\n\t<div class=\"ct-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t<h5><span style=\"color: #993366\"><strong>Conclusion and Suggested Key Initiatives by the Govt. to make Coal Gasification a Success<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\nIndia, the world\u2019s second-largest steel producer, relies heavily on the Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) sector, which contributes around 39.3% of global DRI output. However, DRI plants in India currently operate at a modest 60% capacity utilization.\n\nWith the steel sector poised for strong growth, the DRI route is expected to remain a critical component. To meet future demands sustainably, it is essential for DRI plants to enhance both energy efficiency and environmental performance. Alongside upgrading existing technologies, new DRI projects must prioritize the adoption of low-carbon pathways.
